Special Celebration

The United Church Camping Award

The Saturday evening of Connections 2006 was a joyous occasion as we celebrated and recognized individuals nominated by their camps as people who have made extraordinary contributions to camping ministry with The United Church of Canada. It was with deep appreciation and respect for their contributions to their respective camps, to United Church Camping, and to the lives of children and youth across Canada that we presented them with The United Church of Canada Camping Award.

  • Neita Avery, Rock Lake Camp, Manitoba
  • Doreen Pridmore, Camp Shagabec, Saskatchewan
  • Richard and Penny Pope, George Pringle Memorial Camp, British Columbia
  • Honourable Mention: James Bowlby, MacKenzie Camp, British Columbia

The following individuals, while not present at Connections 2006, were each mailed their certificate along with a letter of appreciation, as well as a copy of the "Honouring Our Own" booklet (see PDF below).

  • The Rev. David Hamilton, Camp Abegweit, Prince Edward Island
  • Steve Miners, Camp Menesetung, Ontario
  • Richard Powely, Camp Outlook, Saskatchewan
  • Judy Symington, MacKenzie Camp, British Columbia

This is the first year we have engaged in this important process of showing our appreciation for the many dedicated people who give so much of their time, energy, and passion to United Church Camping. During the fall of 2005, all United Church camps were mailed an invitation to submit nominations. In addition, e-mail promotions were sent out and notices were posted online and in the newsletter throughout 2006.

At Connections 2006, copies of the "Honouring Our Own" booklet were distributed to everyone during the Saturday evening celebrations. The booklet shared the comments and stories we received from those who nominated the above individuals. We were all blessed to learn about their many contributions and dedicated commitment to their camps.

We hope that, in the future, more camps will participate in this celebration by nominating individuals from their camps. Here at the General Council Office, we promise to once again do our best to distribute the invitations to participate in this important process. But your assistance is always needed—to provide us with up-to-date contact names and addresses for our database.
